Phillip Island is one of the few circuits visited by both WSB and Moto GP, and like Assen, has reputation for being a top class international track that delivers high speed racing along with a spectacular backdrop. As with any track with high speed turns, the riders generally love it, especially the Aussies. Bayliss was in the mood to take the double in front of his family, friends and fan club, and had been dominant in qualifying, setting a new sub 1.32sec track record in the process. He wasted little time hitting the front in Race 1 and duly left the fours screaming in his booming wake. With 6 laps to go, he held a lead of almost 10 secs over a dicing pack of Corser, Toseland and Barros , with Haga unable to keep up as the R1 chewed its tyres. But there was to be an incredible twist in Race 1 once again, and suddenly Baylisstic’s lap times started to drop. In a matter of a couple laps, Corser and Barros were on him, and in a gesture of surrender, the leader waved a leg to indicate which side they should pass him as they dropped down Lukey Heights. With three to go, Toseland swept through into third, now 2 secs behind the front two. Although Haga was having his own tyre woes, he still had enough pace to overtake the Xerox Ducati rider, who was now in a battle to save fifth from the other quick Dukes, ridden by Rolfo and Xaus. He just held off Xaus (Sterilgarda Berik), but Rolfo (SC Carrachi) relegated him to a desperately disappointing sixth. Barros had dogged Corser for the last five laps, showing him a wheel at Honda and at the bottom of Lukey Heights (MG), but Corser is not world champion for nothing, and as Barros was to find out, he will not be pressured into a silly mistake, nor will he give up a win without fight. Especially on home turf. The likeable Brazilian can be in no doubt he will have to use all those years of experience in ‘the premier league’ to take his first world championship, with at least four other riders more than capable of beating him in a dice. Unsurprisingly Bayliss changed tactics in Race 2. Having fitted harder tyres that had more chance of doing the distance, he sat behind James Toseland for the first two thirds of the race, letting the Ten Kate Honda rider take them both out of sight of their pursuers. Having gone a whole season without a crash of note, it was a mighty surprise when Corser dumped the Alstare Corona Suzuki in an unspectacular crash as he gassed it out of MG. He was hugely lucky not to be hit, first by Barros who swerved to avoid him, and appeared to catch his back hump, missing his head by millimetres. He then dived for the sidelines and reached safety just as the following pack swept through. This was the end of Barros’ chances of winning, especially when the Yamahas of Haga and Pitt went past, and it took him a good five laps to finally shake them off, with the front two long gone. With 6 laps to go Bayliss made his move, and having taken the lead, he immediately opened a gap and apparently effortlessly left a battling Toseland for dead. Although the tyre trouble hit him again, he managed to deal with it sufficiently well to take the win by a comfortable margin. Although it was his first win this year, he has had the raw pace to win all four races, and not many would bet against him winning the title at the moment.
