Red Bull Honda superbike rider Jonathan Rea consistently finished in the top ten with an eighth and another impressive fifth place in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship today (9 April). In race one, the 19-year-old did not have the strongest of starts and emerged in tenth place at the end of the incident-packed first lap that saw the deployment of the safety car for two laps. Once the safety car returned to the pits Rea set to work and battled his way back through the field aboard his Dunlop-shod Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade and by lap twelve was running in eighth, a position he held until the race was red-flagged due to the treacherous weather conditions. Race two was reduced to 15 laps due to the worsening weather conditions and the riders were given a ten-minute wet practice session prior to the start. Rea was ninth at the end of the first lap and fought his way up to fifth position; a formidable result given the race conditions. As a result of his two top ten finishes Rea moves up to seventh in the overall Championship standings. Jonathan Rea: “I was really disappointed with the first race as the times we were doing on race tyres were good but I got a really bad start and had to work my way through and after the safety car I found it difficult to find my rhythm. The result wasn’t what I really wanted but, given the conditions, I was pleased to finish. I had a better start in race two and I felt very calm and worked my way through. I’m just happy to get some results and the bike is working really well, so roll on Thruxton!” Havier Beltran: “An interesting weekend. The conditions were treacherous for everybody and I’m just really pleased with Jonathan. He finished the second race in those conditions and elevated himself up in the Championship. Yet again another improvement. Our goal is to keep improving every weekend and so far that is what we are doing.” Superbike Race One Result 1, Gregorio Lavilla (Ducati) 20m53.166s, 2, Ryuichi Kiyonari (HM Plant Honda) +0.134s, 3, Leon Haslam (Ducati) +5.246s, 4, Michael Laverty (Honda) +9.361s, 5, Shane Byrne (Suzuki) +9.591s, 6, Karl Harris (HM Plant Honda) +10.540s, 7, Michael Rutter (Honda) +11.533s, 8, Jonathan Rea (Red Bull Honda) +20.235s, 9, Dean Thomas (Kawasaki) +22.451s, 10, Scott Smart (Suzuki) +23.216s.
