Red Bull Honda Superbike rider Jonathan Rea romped to his best-ever British Superbike result with a fourth place finish in round three of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Thruxton today (17 April). In race one the bumper Easter Monday crowd witnessed Rea, who had qualified in eighth, hold sixth place on the first lap when the safety car was deployed after a first corner incident. Once the racing recommenced on lap four, the 19-year-old Louth-based rider captivated the crowds attention as he engaged in a tantalising battle for fourth place with Shane Byrne, the former British Superbike Champion and ex-MotoGP racer. The Ulsterman eventually won and claimed a fourth place finish, his best result to date aboard his Dunlop-shod Honda 1000RR Fireblade. In race two, Rea once again traded places with the much more experienced riders, and after a great ride, eventually finished in fifth position in the second 22-lap race. As a result of his consistency, Rea moves up to fifth place in the Championship standings with a total of 54 points. Jonathan Rea: “I’m happy with my two solid results and its something for us to build on. I really enjoyed racing with Shakey Byrne, he’s a nice safe rider and I learned a lot from him out there in the first race. I’d like to thank Chris Pike and the mechanics for all their hard work this weekend. It’s a shame we couldn’t get on the front row in qualifying but we will build on this and get stronger as the year goes on. The next round is at Oulton Park which I like and we’re testing there this week, so I’m looking forward to that.” Havier Beltran: “Two top five finishes is a fantastic result for Jonathan. The team has put a lot of hard work and effort in and it is starting to pay off. It’s good to see that he is maturing as a rider and the mistakes are few and far between and that he is learning and moving forwards which is what we are looking for.” Superbike Race One Result 1, Gregorio Lavilla (Ducati) 28m47.270s, 2, Leon Haslam (Ducati) +4.460s, 3, Ryuichi Kiyonari (Honda) +12.742s, 4, Jonathan Rea (Red Bull Honda) +18.921s, 5, Shane Byrne (Suzuki) +19.058s, 6, Michael Rutter (Honda) +22.866s, 7, Glen Richards (Honda) +30.839s, 8, Tommy Hill (Yamaha) +30.974s, 9, Dean Thomas (Kawasaki) +34.210s, 10, Michael Laverty (Honda) +34.252s.
