Red Bull Honda riders Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty return to the fray this weekend (16/17 April) as they head to Thruxton circuit for round three of the Bennetts British Superbike and the British Supersport Championships respectively. Nineteen-year-old Rea currently lies in seventh place in the world’s toughest domestic Superbike Championship and has continually impressed his fellow superbike riders with his blistering form at the first two rounds of the series this year. At Donington Park last weekend, Rea once again finished in the top ten with an eighth and fifth place and consistently featured in the top five throughout the weekend’s practice and warm up sessions. Last year, Thruxton was the Irishman’s second British Superbike meeting. The Louth-based racer, who counts the high-speed track among his favourites, is upbeat about the coming weekend and anticipating a pair of top five finishes at the 2.3-mile venue. So far this season, fellow Red Bull rider Eugene Laverty has made it onto the rostrum at each round of the British Supersport Championship and is keen to make it three in a row. The Ulsterman knows the circuit well; he recorded a win at the Hampshire track in 2004 when he competed in the 125 Championship for Red Bull. Jonathan Rea: “I get on with the track reasonably well and I really enjoy racing there. It is really fast and flowing and it’s the about the only track in the UK where we can corner in excess of 100mph. It would be great to have a rostrum finish this weekend but I will be happy with a pair of top five finishes. I just need to get a good clean start and get into the rhythm as soon as possible.” Eugene Laverty: “I have fond memories of Thruxton and to be able to get my first supersport win there would be fantastic. It’s a great circuit to race with lots of slipstreaming and high-speeds. As long as I qualify well I should be in with a good chance of another podium.” Red Bull Honda Manager Havier Beltran: “Like everyone we are looking forward to what will hopefully be a dry weekend, as the wet hampers progress all-round. Both the guys are looking forward to racing at Thruxton, and with their current strong form I’m confident of some solid results this weekend.” Round three of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place on the 14/16/17 April. Practice day takes place on Friday with no activity on Saturday, due to local noise restrictions. Qualifying for the British Superbike Championship takes place at 15.00 on Sunday 16 April, with qualifying for British Supersport Championship at 08.50 and 14.10. The first 22-lap British Superbike race starts at 13.30 and the second at 16.15. The 20-lap British Supersport Championship race starts at 12.40. The ITV broadcast window is Monday 17 April from 15.00 – 17.00.
