That someone is Hudson “Hurricane” Kennaugh the current GSX-R Cup title holder and former South African Superbike Champion. Kennaugh took the decision to move to the Metzeler Racetec National Superstock Championship in the UK, as he felt the level of competition was high and his Carbon Can Company Yamaha team were capable of backing him all the way through his inaugural season. “I certainly didn’t come here for the weather!” joked Kennaugh, “British Superstock has some stiff competition and it is a good championship. It looks like it is going to be particularly good this year, especially with HM Plant Honda getting involved and running John McGuinness. We went alright at Snetterton pre season test; it has just been a baptism of fire with cold weather and cold race conditions.” Kennaugh has limited experience of British circuits, knowing only Silverstone and Donington Park, although he is now getting to grips with Snetterton, “It is a very challenging circuit, very fast and quite interesting. You’ve got a lot of flow to it and it’s not too Mickey Mouse, it’s got a little chicane that is nice, a little bit of everything. It is good to pass on, just wish the weather had been better as the corners are so fast you just don’t want to tip off at 100mph!” he commented. Having raced mainly Suzuki’s for the past few years the departure to Yamaha may have come as a surprise to Hurricane fans. However Kennaugh is happy with his new steed and his new team, it is a complete change of scenery for him and he is enjoying it. The undulating Brands Hatch circuit poses quite a challenge to Kennaugh as he has never been there before. “I’ve seen it on TV and in games, but that is it,” he said “We will be alright, we are racing the Indy circuit first, but I’m planning on getting in a few track days to go and look at other circuits in the championship. I know Donington so I’m looking forward to that, Brands is going to be the hardest one for a while. I’m definitely in at the deep end!” Returning to World level hasn’t been ruled out completely “I’ve a couple of things in the pipe line, and although with my team we are going at this championship, I’ve still got the freedom to try and do some more championship races and whatever comes up. It will be good.” Shame the same can’t be said for the British weather “I’ve got heaters everywhere just to try and stay warm – I’ll have to get used to it,” lamented Kennaugh. The Hurricane will be in action this weekend as he makes his debut at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent, for the first round of the Metzeler Racetec National Superstock Championship on the 24th-26th March.
