Robbie Brown claimed his third victory of the season in emphatic fashion to edge closer to championship leader Lee Johnston, as the ninth round of the season took place at Croft in North Yorkshire (13 September).
As Brown lined up on pole for the second time this season, thoughts of damage limitation ran through Johnston’s mind from his uncustomary qualifying of 10th position back on row 3. Cadwell Park race winner, Jimmy Hill, made the early running leading into the first series of corners with Northover (Team Haribo Starmix) and Akroyd (Gemboy Racing/TJW Racing) in hot pursuit. Brown moved through for the lead as the riders entered the Complex for the first time of asking, immediately pulling out a discernible gap from his pursuants.
As the Yorkshire circuit became bathed in sunshine, the brightest rays shone upon race leader Brown. Head down, he motored for home extending his race lead lap by lap to just over 8 seconds by the chequered flag. Behind, the action was hotting up as no fewer than six riders battled for the remaining podium slots over the opening laps. Northover, his handlebar nudged by another rider, crashed out from third on lap 4, to be followed off-track by Hill at the Complex exit three laps later. Both riders rejoined to finish outside of the points in 25th and 19th respectively.
Lee Johnston ( Trevor Pennell Transport), took up Brown’s challenge, powering his Yamaha through the field onto the podium by lap 7. Despite constant pressure over the next few circulations from Nikki Coates (Dyer Crossgills Racing), Johnston held his position to the flag. Coates claimed third ahead of Joe Burns, the first senior podium of his career.
The season is now delicately poised in the quest for the title with three races remaining. The tenth round of the season takes place at Silverstone in two weeks time (26-28 September).
Robbie Brown: “I found that quite a difficult race, I was struggling to know how fast to go, I was just looking at my lap board. Anyway it was a good result for me, and I’ve closed the gap to Lee (Johnston) with three rounds left."
