Team EMCOs Jimmy Hill claimed his debut victory of the season in an incident packed race, surviving a safety car deployment and an off-track excursion at Cadwell Park (25 August).
Lining up on pole position for the first time this season, Hill gave way to surprise front row starter, Jonathan Dickson into the first turn. Hill turned the screw to move into the lead at the close of lap 2, with Robbie Brown in third.
Championship leader, Lee Johnston was slowly moving through the pack attempting to regain lost positions after running off the track on the opening lap. However, a Nick Clark crash on the exit of the Hairpin saw the field bunch up with the deployment of the safety car as the Race Line Yamaha was rescued from the track.
Jimmy Hill’s 1.7s lead had been whittled down as a result, but the Sussex based rider played a tactical waiting game, pulling the pin with superb drive out of Barn to start lap 9 moving instantly clear of the field. The win looked all but assured until an error at Barn the following lap meant Hill had to take evasive action. Taking to the grass he rejoined down in third, Leon Hunt the new leader.
The penultimate lap saw a flurry of activity. Chris Northover (Team Haribo Starmix), and Lee Johnston closed the gap to make it a five-way dice for the win. Northover made a text book pass on Brown to take third on the track at Park, and Leon Hunt succumbed to the pressure, crashing out of second at Hall Bends, allowing Hill to extend his lead with a new lap record of 1:32.808s. Johnston, looking purely for damage limitation after a poor start, took the opportunity on the final lap to dive up the inside of Robbie Brown at Barn to steal third on the drag to the line and extend his overall Championship lead.
The ninth round of the season takes place at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire in three weeks time (12-14 September).
Jimmy Hill: “That was such a hard race. I was leading from early on, made a mistake and dropped to third. With the mistakes I made I thought I’d lost it. Great thanks to MCO, Arlen Ness, and all my friends and family.”
