Race Report by Metzeler
Steve Brogan transformed his third pole position into his fourth victory of the season at Snetterton, Norfolk, during the opening 15-lap race of the day (15 June).
Jon Kirkham (Raceways Yamaha) stole the holeshot with the chasing pack in hot pursuit over the opening two laps. Ben Wilson, hot off the line from a third row start came under immense pressure from Neill, Storrar, Seeley and Coates being forced back from third to seventh by the close of lap 1.
Setting the new lap record on the first flying lap (1:07.219s), Steve Brogan on the Honda UK Racing CBR1000RR closed onto the tails of the breakaway Kirkham. Stealing through for the lead at the Esses on lap 4, Brogan set about extending his lead at the top of the championship table.
Kirkham, although posting consistently fast laps on the Raceways Yamaha was unable to make an impression on Brogan’s lead, taking his fourth second placed finish of the campaign at the flag.
As the leading pair broke away, a dramatic five-way battle unfolded in the hunt for the final podium position. Alastair Seeley (Team Rea Estates Racing Yamaha) finally made the position his own after fighting off the persistent challenges of Donington Park race winner, Marshall Neill, Adrian Coates, Jimmy Storrar and Peter Hickman.
Negotiating a tricky set of back-markers over the closing two laps, Brogan took the chequered flag by three seconds from Kirkham, with Seeley in third relishing his first visit to the podium of the season.
Steve Brogan, Honda (UK) Racing: "Jon got a mega start and I was a bit worried about the gap he pulled in the opening two laps. You make a plan before the race and my plan was to make a start like Jon's and make a break. I knew that I had to catch him early to stand a chance of getting away. Luckily I managed to do that, I'm happy for the win.”
