Robbie Brown took the chequered flag and with it the championship lead in a closely fought contest at Donington Park (26 May).
AJ Venter (M.A.P. Embassy Triumph) converted pole into holeshot, closely followed by Lee Johnston (Trevor Pennell Transport Yamaha) with Robbie Brown a close third. A red flag incident involving two riders at Melbourne on lap three saw the race brought to an abrupt end.
The reduced 11-lap restart saw Leon Hunt propel his Excel Performance Yamaha into the lead from the second row, only to be judged to have jumped start, receiving a ride-through penalty. Before entering the pit lane at the end of lap 5, Hunt, Venter and Brown continually swapped the lead as the front group looked to break clear.
With Hunt out of contention, Robbie Brown (Robbie Brown Racing), took the race by the scruff of the neck, determined to exorcise his Donington Park demons of an horrific crash in 2006. The 19 year old rode a spirited and sometimes defensive second half to the race to claim his second win of the season. Brown almost lost out to Johnston as he ran deep into the Melbourne hairpin on the penultimate lap. However, a deft overtake through the Old Hairpin handed the Yamaha rider a deserved 25 points. At the chequered flag, just 0.199s split the podium positions, with Brown taking victory from Johnston and Venter.
The fifth round takes place at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit over the weekend of 13-15 June.
