Steve Brogan continued his domination of the Metzeler National Superstock Championship to claim his sixth victory from eight races this season, at Knockhill (10 August). Raceways Yamaha’s Jon Kirkham posted the fastest ever Superstock lap of the 1.3 mile Knockhill circuit to claim pole position, but could not transform his qualifying domination into back-to-back wins. Brogan took off like the proverbial greyhound after the rabbit from the traps, the win already assured in his mind. Martin Buckles made a superb start on the JX Kawasaki from the outside of the front row to be running in second then third for the opening laps. Unfortunately for the 28 year old from Suffolk, a little over-exuberance saw him crash out of the race from second at Butchers on lap 5. Ben Wilson’s sterotypical aggression propelled the Boston-based rider up into third the same lap, but the Yamaha rider suffered in the wet conditions, losing the front on the run in to Real Radio Hairpin with the dab of front brake at mid-race distance. Meanwhile, Brogan was comfortably setting the pace at the front with his season-long nemesis, Kirkham attempting to close the gap. Responding to his pit board as Kirkham looked to be reeling in the Liverpudlian Honda UK rider, Brogan pulled the pin on lap 17 as he headed towards the chequered fag. SPR Racing’s Daniel Hegarty looked to have claimed his frst podium since the Virgin Mobile Cup in 2005. However, Hegarty was later ajudged to have overtaken under yellow flags, receiving a 2.1s time penalty. This would in effect reverse his finishing position with Astro Kawasaki’s Kenny Gilbertson. The win gives Steve Brogan a slightly more comfortable buffer over Kirkham as the series heads to Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire over the August Bank Holiday (23-25 August).
