When the paddock wake up in Bellpuig this morning, it was raining in Catalunya and none was really expecting such bad weather! Luckily the clouds disappeared at mid-day and it’s under perfect conditions that the qualifications took place on a well-prepared track.
In the MX1 class one rider was missing on the track: Mickael Pichon who finally announced to his team in the morning that he wasn’t able to compete the second round of the FIM World Championship. The Frenchman left Barcelona tired and disappointed, as he lost there his last chance in the series.
Fastest in both free practice sessions, Estonian Tanel Leok confirmed his Flemish podium when he claimed later the second pole position of his career. Stefan Everts was leading most of the period, but in his last attempt Leok improved his lap time and offered a great result to Kawasaki. “This winter we worked a lot with the team and the factory to improve the bike, and I’m’ really pleased with the result. Today the track was pretty fast but came bumpier through the day, and it was perfect for the qualifying session. I’m in pole and I must admit that since last year I enjoy this exercise, but many riders were fast today. I just expect now another podium tomorrow,” explained the “Estonian express”. For the first time since a while nine riders ended the session in the same second, and the race could be more undecided tomorrow even if Everts and Tortelli will be favourites. They ended the session in second and fourth position, but Tortelli captured this spot in the last minute! Steve Ramon is third between Everts and Tortelli, while Ken De Dycker, Kevin Strijbos, Julien Bill, Brian Jorgensen and Stephen Sword are all in the same second as the poleman.
Antonio Cairoli got the holeshot and won pretty easily his MX2 qualifying race, followed by Kenneth Gundersen who claimed another good result after his brilliant performance in Flanders. In the other race Marc De Reuver got the holeshot and led most of the heat, but Tyla Rattray passed him and was the final winner.
The MX2 races are scheduled at 12.05 and 15.03, the MX1 at 13.05 and 16.03 local time.
