Round 2 Donington Park witnessed the second and third rounds of the 2008 KTM series, the races split over two days (25/26 May). Despite of crashing on the first of two warm-up laps, Kelvin Reilly rode a smooth race in treacherous conditions to record his first win of the season in the reduced 10-lap race at Donington Park (25 May). With Dave Heal finishing tenth, Reilly took the overnight championship lead. Five riders made an early break, led by Superbike Magazine journalist Jonathan Pearson, during the opening exchanges. Braking late into Goddard’s for the second time, Pearson ran wide allowing the chasing group through to leave him in fifth by the next corner. Richard Cooper and Dave Wood made a two-bike break at the front, swapping positions and fastest laps allowing Reilly to close the gap to make it a six-wheeler by lap 4. Cooper and Wood looked comfortable but suffered with two crashes on successive corners as first Cooper crashed out at McLean’s with Wood falling at the following corner(Coppice). Cooper’s race was over but Wood managed to remount in the hunt for valuable championship points. Reilly, gifted the lead, made the break with Pearson elevated into second and a lonely Dave Heal rounding out the podium. Heading into the second race of the weekend, the top five riders were separated by just six points. Kelvin Reilly: “I don’t know what happened to Wood and Cooper but what a great race and nice to be leading the Championship.” Round 3 Dave Wood made amends for his seventh lap crash on Sunday with a superb performance to record his second victory of the season (26 May). Wood took the holeshot with Cooper and round two race winner, Kelvin Reilly in hot pursuit. The front three made a clean break from the field, quickly pulling a three second gap on Jonathan Pearson in third. Reilly on the Inmoto Corse KTM found the pace tough going as Wood, with Cooper glued to his tail, pulled clear in a two-battle for the win. Cooper swarmed all over the rear of Wood’s Art of Racing 990 Super Duke, looking for different sweeping lines to cut back inside but to no avail. Wood kept his composure as Cooper made a couple of minor errors over the final two laps to take the chequered flag by 1.2s. Collecting the race win and 25 points, Wood regained the championship lead by a narrow 4 points from Reilly.
