Coming to a new circuit for the first time is difficult, but coming to a new circuit with a new team and a new bike, that is a whole different league of difficult, and that is exactly what Hudson Kennaugh is having to deal with this weekend at his World Superport debut with the Moto – 1 Suzuki team. The Current South African Superbike Champion has a mountain to climb this race weekend but he knows he has to do it. The heavens opened over night leaving Imola wet for Kennaugh’s first outing onto its famous tarmac as he explains,“The first session was wet but the second session was dry and we were working hard on set up. I never got in for my qualifying tyres, but it’s not too bad, we’ve pinned all our hopes on tomorrow for qualifying. Top fifteen definite, but if we could creep in to the top ten that would be our goal. We’ll just take it as it comes.” Not making it in for his qualifiers and treating first qualifying as a practice session left Hudson in twenty sixth place, so he has a lot of work to do for second qualifying. Out on track Kennaugh has been finding it hard to believe where he is racing and who he is actually on track with. “It is an amazing track, different surfaces all around. Just so much nostalgia, I‘ve watched it on TV so many times. It is really fast with some very scary corners, so just getting your head around it is a bit of a problem,” he said “Charpentier passed me and I was like “Oh that’s Charpentier!” and I was naming the corners, but after that a couple of guys blew past me and I got my head down and got going. I’m just learning the track so I didn’t want to touch the bike too early, I want to build on the whole thing. If it rains we’ve got a good chance, and if it’s dry, well we need to see how qualifying goes.” Twenty sixth may not sound like a lot but Kennaugh improved his time by eight seconds during first qualifying “ A couple of guys passed me and I picked up some time, I think I improved eight seconds, if I do that in second qualifying I’ll be on pole! But I somehow don’t think it will be that easy!” The mid paced riders have had Hudson hanging on for a tow and to help him learn the circuit “The medium paced riders you can tag on and learn a bit but when one of the top guys come past, they just disappear quite fast.” The Supersport GSX-R 600 is quite different to the 750 and 1000cc that Hudson is used to racing but that isn’t holding him back “The bike is good, it’s really, really fast, I can’t believe how quick it is especially when you keep the revs up, it revs forever as well. They’ve got a tricky quick shifter on there but I’ve got used to that, it has quite a different feel to get used to, plus it is a proper racing bike. Even the riding position is way out there, everything is so firm on the bike that I softened it up, but now I’m hardening it up again to go faster.” The Hurricane’s aim this weekend is simple – top fifteen. “If I’m out of the top fifteen I’ll be really upset, if I can creep into the top ten we will have a big party at Imola!”
