“Hurricane” Hudson Kennaugh, current South African Superbike Champion, had his talents as a rider recognised by the Moto -1 Suzuki World Supersport team, who have offered him a ride at the two remaining rounds of the Alstare Corona Extra World Supersport Championship.
Kennaugh will race along side Matthieu Lagrive on the GSX-R 600 continuing his allegiance to Suzuki. “I’m looking forward to Imola,” he said “I’m going to race the Supersport there and then the same bike at Magny Cours which will give me a bit more practice on the track and hopefully have some better races.”
The news of the Supersport ride softened the blow of Hudson losing his GSX-R Cup Championship lead at the Eurospeedway. He is now in second place and five points down on Spaniard Carmelo Morales who is leading. The GSX-R Cup only allows the riders two 45 minute sessions to set up their machines and to qualify, “In total we get just over an hour to qualify and you get two chances of setting things up, and we tried some more stuff for the race and it just didn’t work out,” said Kennaugh.
Kennaugh now needs a win at Magny Cours to draw with the winner. However, he is putting all of that out of his mind and concentrating on Imola, “That is what I’m looking forward to now, I’ve always wanted to race at Imola, it’s such a famous track. I know Suzuki are looking for a new up and coming rider to wave the flag for them. I don’t know if it’s me yet but I’ll give it flat out and hopefully it is me.”
Between rounds of the GSX-R Cup, Hudson has been racing in the Radiator SA Superbike Championship to try and defend his title. Last weekend at Kyalami he finished in second and third place and is now lying third in the Championship. “The 35 degree air temperature meant that I was at a disadvantage with my Pirelli tyres. I qualified on pole but lack of traction held me back” he said
Things are still being finalised with the Moto-1 team for next year but it is looking like Hudson Kennaugh will become a World Supersport regular. |
