Blizzard conditions greeted Red Bull Honda Supersport rider Eugene Laverty as the field lined up for the start of the 17-lap British Supersport race at a rain soaked Donington Park today (9 April). As conditions improved a little, the riders were eventually despatched for two warm-up laps, but the race was delayed once again as the riders weren’t happy with the conditions. The race finally got under starter’s orders later in the day. When the race eventually re-started the race length was reduced 12 laps. By the end of the opening lap the 19-year-old from Toomebridge was in sixth place aboard the Red Bull Honda CBR600RR. As conditions deteriorated, Laverty clawed his way back up the field and had just claimed the lead when the race was red flagged. The race was re-started with a six-lap dash to the flag. Laverty executed a great start and maintained third on the Dunlop-shod machine throughout the race. On the last lap Laverty was challenged by two riders but managed to defend his position and come home in a well-fought third place and in doing so, he maintains his third place in the Championship. Eugene Laverty: “Those were not the conditions we were after, especially after this morning’s warm up in the dry where I was quickest and was looking for my first win, but the heavens opened. In the first part of the race I’d just got into the lead when Crutchlow went down on the oil and the race was stopped, so that may have been the first victory. The race was eventually run over six laps and to bring it home in those conditions is all you can ask for really.” Havier Beltran: “I am really pleased for Eugene. It was difficult with his race being abandoned, the second race being stopped and restarted, but he held on to third at the end, a very good result. I just hope the weather gets better for Thruxton.” Supersport Result 1, Cal Crutchlow (Honda) 11m20.935s, 2, Pere Riba (Kawasaki) +6.988s, 3, Eugene Laverty (Red Bull Honda) +13.805s, 4, Dennis Hobbs (Honda) +13.920s, 5, Tom Sykes (Suzuki) +14.134s, 6, Rob Frost (Kawasaki) +16.362s, 7, Jamie Robinson (Honda) +24.152s, 8, Pete Spalding (Honda) +24.414s, 9, James Hillier (Kawasaki) +25.947s, 10, Stuart Easton (Ducati) +28.148s.
