Leon Camier and Leon Haslam took the victories in the tenth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Croft where Shane Byrne fell six points short of sealing his second title success in five years. The focus of attention was always going to centre on Airwaves Ducati rider Byrne who had taken a battering in a big high-side during opening practice and he was well on the pace in an opening race in which Yorkshireman Tom Sykes made the early running. The Rizla Suzuki rider was at his most determined, heading the pack while behind him Haslam was duelling, and winning the scrap for second place with his HM Plant Honda team-mate Cal Crutchlow. Haslam aiming to become the first rider to win four races on the bounce moved out front on the seventh lap with Sykes coming under pressure from Crutchlow. Behind them, Camier was impressing, closing the leaders down and snatching second place on the tenth lap and then pressurising Haslam, taking him three laps later and then charging to his Airwaves Ducati to a second victory of the season. Byrne was up to third on the penultimate lap, but next time around was on the end of a determined challenge from Sykes at the Hairpin. The Rizla Suzuki rider emerged in third place, with Byrne dropping back to fifth. “It’s no point reflecting on what happened,” said the disappointed Byrne. “My objective was to finish ahead of Tom but he made a move and I went wide both him and Cal Crutchlow got back in front of me. I’m a bit frustrated, to say the least.” Sykes gave his version: ““He stuck to his line and I stuck to mine and we met in the middle and there was a bit of fairing bashing It was a bit unfortunate but there was nothing controversial about it – we’d changed places a couple of times and on the last lap there was a fair gap.” Pole-starter Crutchlow made the running in the second race with Sykes tucked in behind but Haslam was on the charge, moving into third place on the eighth lap and then closing in as Sykes finally found a way into the lead. It was closely fought but Haslam had the momentum, snatching second from Crutchlow with a couple of laps remaining and then grabbing the lead, and the race victory on the penultimate lap. Sykes took second from Crutchlow and Byrne who now leads the title chase 388-294 from Haslam with Sykes third on 290 points as they head for the penultimate round at Silverstone over the weekend of 26-27-28 September. John Laverty powered through the pain barrier to clinch the Daily Star Cup title. He was still suffering from the knee ligament injuries sustained at Knockhill but he put on a battling performance to take a pair of seconds, adrift of Gary Mason in each race. “It’s a great feeling to wrap it up here,” said the Buildbase NW200 Ducati rider. “I knew that I needed strong results but I was worried that this is a demanding, twisty circuit, quite bumpy circuit and I didn’t want to do any more damage to my knee. “I really didn’t expect to do it but this is great – we have had a brilliant season and apart from a sore knee, I am feeling fine,” said Laverty as he opened up an unassailable 127 points lead over Riders Racing Honda race-ace Martin Jessopp. British Superbikes – Croft Race One Result Pos - Rider – Bike - Team - Time 1 - Leon Camier - Ducati - Airwaves Ducati - 27:06.760 2 - Leon Haslam - Honda - HM Plant Honda - 27:09.304 3 - Tom Sykes - Suzuki - Rizla Suzuki - 27:12.873 4 - Cal Crutchlow - Honda - HM Plant Honda - 27:13.126 5 - Shane Byrne - Ducati - Airwaves Ducati - 27:13.341 6 - Michael Rutter - Ducati - North West 200 Ducati - 27:20.649 7 - Michael Laverty - Suzuki - Relentless Suzuki by TAS - 27:25.791 8 - Karl Harris - Yamaha - Team Yamaha - 27:26.343 9 - James Ellison - Honda - Hydrex Bike Animal Honda - 27:26.482 10 - Simon Andrews - Yamaha - Jentin Racing / Lloyds British - 27:31.667 11 - Gary Mason - Honda - Quay Garage - 27:36.542 12 - Atsushi Watanabe - Suzuki - Rizla Suzuki - 27:37.773 13 - Scott Smart - Kawasaki - Hawk Racing - 27:40.317 14 - Tristan Palmer - Honda - Tena for Men Honda - 27:46.338 15 - Stuart Easton - Kawasaki - MSS Discovery Kawasaki - 27:46.635 16 - John Laverty - Ducati - Buildbase NW200 Ducati - 27:46.913 17 - Billy McConnell - Kawasaki - MSS Discovery Kawasaki - 27:48.180 18 - Guy Martin - Honda - Hydrex Bike Animal Honda - 27:53.529 19 - Chris Burns - MV Agusta - STP Superbike - 27:57.392 20 - David Johnson - Honda - Team MAXXIS - 28:00.574 21 - Martin Jessopp - Honda - Riders Racing - 28:13.427 22 - Tom Tunstall - Honda - Hardinge - Ice Valley Motorsport - 28:14.144 23 - Michael Howarth - Honda - Tena for Men Honda - 27:28.232 Not Classified DNF - Jason O'Halloran - Honda - SMT Honda - 16:39.403 DNF - Shannon Etheridge - Kawasaki - MAR Adept - 15:33.069 British Superbikes – Croft Race Two Result Pos - Rider – Bike - Team - Time 1 - Leon Haslam - Honda - HM Plant Honda - 27:04.305 2 - Tom Sykes - Suzuki - Rizla Suzuki - 27:05.438 3 - Cal Crutchlow - Honda - HM Plant Honda - 27:05.919 4 - Shane Byrne - Ducati - Airwaves Ducati - 27:06.169 5 - Leon Camier - Ducati - Airwaves Ducati - 27:08.045 6 - Michael Rutter - Ducati - North West 200 Ducati - 27:14.093 7 - James Ellison - Honda - Hydrex Bike Animal Honda - 27:21.342 8 - Karl Harris - Yamaha - Team Yamaha - 27:23.040 9 - Simon Andrews - Yamaha - Jentin Racing / Lloyds British - 27:24.198 10 - Michael Laverty - Suzuki - Relentless Suzuki by TAS - 27:26.162 11 - Gary Mason - Honda - Quay Garage - 27:34.967 12 - Atsushi Watanabe - Suzuki - Rizla Suzuki - 27:38.384 13 - Stuart Easton - Kawasaki - MSS Discovery Kawasaki - 27:39.466 14 - Tristan Palmer - Honda - Tena for Men Honda - 27:39.905 15 - Jason O'halloran - Honda - SMT Honda - 27:40.357 16 - John Laverty - Ducati - Buildbase NW200 Ducati - 27:49.808 17 - David Johnson - Honda - Team MAXXIS - 27:54.620 18 - Tom Tunstall - Honda - Hardinge - Ice Valley Motorsport - 28:12.920 19 - Shannon Etheridge - Kawasaki - MAR Adept - 28:13.172 20 - Martin Jessopp - Honda - Riders Racing - 27:13.188 Not Classified DNF - Guy Martin - Honda - Hydrex Bike Animal Honda - 15:27.027 DNF - Scott Smart - Kawasaki - Hawk Racing - 15:28.999 DNF - Billy McConnell - Kawasaki - MSS Discovery Kawasaki - 11:12.548 DNF - Chris Burns - MV Agusta - STP Superbike - 11:26.317 DNF - Michael Howarth - Honda - Tena for Men Honda Championship Points after race two 1 - Shane Byrne (Ducati) - 388 2 - Leon Haslam (Honda) - 294 3 - Tom Sykes (Suzuki) - 290 4 - Cal Crutchlow (Honda) - 265 5 - Leon Camier (Ducati) - 241 6 - Michael Rutter (Ducati) - 215 7 - James Ellison (Honda) - 193 8 - Michael Laverty (Suzuki) - 140 9 - Simon Andrews (Yamaha) - 140 10 - Karl Harris (Yamaha) - 91
