Ian Lowry recorded his first win of the season after providing the main thrust of challenge to the wildcard pairing of Jonathan Rea and Andrew Pitt on the World Supersport Hannspree Ten Kate Hondas.
Lowry proved a surprise package at Donington Park. Consistently fast all weekend, the Relentless by TAS Suzuki rider breezed past the WSS duo for the lead on lap 4. Championship leader, Glen Richards looked as if he may provide another stiff challenge, but his M.A.P. Embassy Triumph faded towards the closing stages of the 18 lap race. Rea pulled the pin as the race entered the final third, a visible gap opening between him and teammate Andrew Pitt.
Miguel Praia impressed the crowd on his first visit to Donington Park. The Portuguese rider closed in to pass Steve Brogan on the penultimate lap, putting the Parkalgar Honda into fifth on track, later to be elevated to a podium finish.
Despite Rea and Pitt taking first and second respectively at the flag, Hannspree Ten Kate Honda negated to take the two Supersport CBR600RR Hondas to parc ferme, elevating Lowry onto the top step of the podium with Richards second and Praia third.
The Championship heads to Snetterton in Norfolk for round 5 over the weekend of 13-15 June.
Jonathan Rea:
“We’ve had a great weekend. It’s been great to be back racing in the UK. We set out with a goal for testing and achieved that. Lowry rode really strong and I just followed him for a while until he made a mistake. I took my chance and knew I could push hard enough to make the break. I look forward to coming back in September.”
