Barclay banks Senior MGP win.
Adam Barclay won a much delayed and shortened Senior MGP after the first attempt to run the race was red flagged due to an oil spill.

 Saturday dawned to leaden sky with low cloud clinging to the hill tops; giving Clerk of the Course Phil Taubman no option but to delay the closure of the roads and await the forecast improvement in conditions. The cloud finally began to thin at noon allowing the road closure to go ahead at 1pm. At 1.45pm the Senior Race began, but with race distance cut to three laps due to the time lost. First away were Simon Fulton and Philip McGurk. Every thing was going well until Chris Bradshaw, number 29, started. Almost as soon as he crossed the line his engine started spewing out smoke and oil. 4 more riders started before some frantic waving alerted officials to the situation whereupon the start was aborted for those waiting to begin their race. The oil slick extended all the way to Ago’s leap and would clearly require major attention before racing could resume. By this time the leading riders were at Glen Helen; unaware of the drama behind them. Adam Barclay was leading on the watches there; but it was purely academic as the decision to stop the race had been taken; the riders being red flagged at Kirk Michael. They were then assembled behind a travelling marshal and set off in convoy for Douglas in he hope of re-starting quite quickly. The convoy duly arrived back at the pits where there was frantic action as bikes were checked; refuelled and in one case changed, in readiness for the re-start. As this was going on; commentator Maurice Mawdsley at Glen Helen reported that there was mist at that point. We feared that the window of opportunity may be closing despite conditions at our vantage point at White Gates being perfect. The weather behaved and the race re-started at 2.45pm; however the distance had been cut to just 2 laps; but at least we were racing. Phil McGurk led on the road at the Glen Helen commentary point; but on the stop watches it was again Adam Barclay who held the lead; just 0.34s from James McCullagh; with McGurk in third. At Ballaugh McCullagh had taken the lead by 3s from Barclay; with McGurk still in third. At our vantage point at White Gates, McGurk still led on the road; but McCullagh had nearly closed the 10s starting interval. Next on the roads was Barclay, but he had lost more time to McCullagh, who led by 5.2s. McGurk still held third. Michael Russell was fourth 1.5s down on McGurk; Scott Wilson was fifth a couple of seconds ahead of Mickey Fitzpatrick. Barclay was the quickest over the mountain section and led the race by 1.78s as he powered along Glencrutchery Road; his opening lap was at 119.216mph. McCullagh also lapped at over 119mph to be 10.14s ahead of McGurk as they began their final lap. Russell held fourth, but Fitzpatrick had edged 0.89s ahead of Wilson; all of these had lapped at over 117mph. The race was over for Philip McGurk when machine problems forced to park at Black Dub. Just along the road at Glen Helen it was McCullagh leading on the road and corrected time, 1.87s from Barclay. Barclay was quicker on the demanding run through the 11th, Handley’s, Bayr Garroo, Kirk Michael, Rhencullen and Alpine; he led by a slender 0.14s at Ballaugh, with Fitzpatrick elevated to third by McGurk’s misfortune. Our amateur timing at White Gates had Barclay 1.3s ahead of McCullagh; with Fitzpatrick 27.5s astern of him. The top six was completed by Scott Wilson; Wayne Kirwan and Noel Patterson; with just 0.4s between the latter two. Barclay piled on the coals over the mountain; at Cronk ny Mona he led by 8.86s and at the end of the race his advantage was 11.13s. Both men had again lapped at over 119mph; with McCullagh’s second lap just 0.1s faster than his first, amazing consistency. Fitzpatrick duly took third place and best 600cc; Scott Wilson fourth; Patterson ousted Kirwan to take fifth; the extra 150cc helping over the mountain. The best newcomer in the race was Kevin Fitzpatrick in eighth. Glyn Jones eventually secured thirteenth but very nearly came to grief at White Gates where he ran onto the pavement and skirted along the airfence before edging back onto the track.
