How’s the 2006 season going so far?

Everything is going amazingly well, I’ve got two new fantastic sponsors, which have turned my bike around from being a bit of an old shed to something much more like competitive.  They are Andrew Hensley and Mark and Lis who run the www.bsbstar.com website you can see on my bike, it is aimed at helping under funded riders so if you get chance please have a look!

I also had the opportunity to ride a KRP (Keen Race Preparation) bike at Mondello Park.  It was supposed to be a one off ride but as the race at Mondello was abandoned I got to ride it at Mallory Park as well for rounds 5 and 6.

The experience of being in the team and getting to ride such a good bike was invaluable and Mark Keen at KRP helped me set up the suspension on my own bike (one of the things I was having trouble with) ready for when I got back on it for round 7 at snetterton.

The improvements to my engine (parts for which were bought by Mark and Lis) were also made just before the Snetterton round, making my bike effectively totally new to me.  It was completely different and the race weekend ended up being a bit of a learning curve as I had to change my riding style to suit the new chassis set up and engine but I finished a creditable 16th

Knockhill round 8 was much better as I’d become more familiar with the new set up and had continued to change my riding style to suit, I finished a good 9th, my best result so far.

However round 9 at Oulton Park was better again with a 7th place finish.

I managed to lap a full 3 seconds faster than I did at the start of the season there (round three), so it goes to show what good sponsors can do!!! My bike is faster and handles so much better than it used to! For which I am extremely grateful to Mark, Lis, Andrew and Mark at KRP.

7th is my best result in the British Championship and I’m currently 19th overall in the championship with 19 pionts, and I’m hoping I can continue to improve as the season goes on.

What are you ambitions for the future?

I’d really like to get a podium in the 125’s firstly but I desperately want to race In the Supersport class hopefully on a good bike, manage to get some good results then maybe move into the Superbikes, that would be a dream come true!!!

I’d love to race abroad also, I would really love to race in the all girl 24hour endurance team at Le Mans that would also be a dream come true, and I’d like to win it, I think girls can as we’re less prone to go mental from the start, just take our time, run the bike nice and conservative, no brake downs, no crashes and win the race!!

I’d also like to race in the Women’s European cup, but again I’d like to win that so I’d probably be quite nervous to start with as I don’t know how I’d compare to the other girls (hopefully no tot badly).

Racing History

In 1998 I trained to be a motorbike mechanic with the aim of racing in mind and became a full time motorcycle technician for a Chester based motorcycle dealership in 1999.  A work colleague was racing at the time and pointed me in the direction to start.

After a few track days I competed in my first race on my road bike, a Honda VFR400.

I sold my 400 after realising it was nowhere near competitive enough in it’s standard trim, and with no money to spruce it up I sold it and bought a 1992 Honda 125gp bike for £800 (not much better but at least it was a proper race bike) and I raced it in some club meetings in 2000.

In 2001 I bought a 1999 125 (slightly better bike) and competed in the MRO championship as well as at club meetings.

After buying a 2000 model RS Honda (better again) I made the jump into the British 125gp championship, which had been my ambition from the start, so I was really happy to be on the grid!

I missed the first couple of rounds and unfortunately missed the last few as well when I was involved in a four man crash at Cadwell Park, braking my Collar bone, ankle and wrist in one go.  But I never the less really enjoyed my first taste of the 125gp Championship.

2004 was my first full season and I managed to have some good success despite having pretty much no money, I begged, stole and borrowed as much as possible just to keep going, but still managed to lead one race in damp conditions at Brands Hatch, I was riding on a set of used slicks I’d just nicked from the scrap pile at Dunlop’s (they were rubbish cos I fell off) and I managed to score a good 10th place two meetings later despite dislocating my collar bone two weeks previously at Knoickhill, picking up my first ever points in the championship.  I also finished 3rd in the EMRA club 125gp championship that year, which I was really chuffed with (although I really wanted to win it! But had to miss two races with my dislocated collar bone)

In 2005 I was offered a British Supersport ride, however the new team did not materialise due to unforeseen circumstances and I was left with no ride and no funds to back any racing aspirations I had for the season.  Never the less I was determined to race and so raced in the British 125 gp Championship again back on my own bike and with an even smaller budget if that was possible.

2005 was a difficult season due to the severe lack of funds but I continued to improve my lap times and took the fact that I even managed to race at each round as a great achievement considering the total lack of money I had.  I was once again scaving second hand tyres and parts for my bike but I managed to race the full season on less than £5,500 including entry fees, which I took as a great achievement!

Things have totally turned around this season, however, my website has helped tremendously and I now have some fantastic sponsors who have changed my bike into a much more competitive package, I now have new tyres and do not have to worry so much about spares for my bike.

The improvements to my bike thanks to my superb sponsors have shown in my results, a 9th and 7th most recently out of over 40 riders in the class and I am hoping I can still improve yet.
